In-Home Speech Therapy for Children in Durham Region
Speech therapy at your home, on your schedule. We travel to families throughout Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Courtice, and Brooklin.
At Functional Communication, every session takes place where your child is most comfortable — at home, at daycare, or at their private school. No clinic visits. No waiting rooms. Just focused, one-on-one speech therapy for children ages 1 to 7.
Why In-Home Speech Therapy Works for Young Children
For toddlers and preschoolers, the home is where communication happens most. It makes sense that it's where therapy works best, too.
Familiar Environment
Children are more relaxed and engaged at home. No warm-up period needed. Your child is ready to go from the moment the session starts, surrounded by their own toys and comfort items.
Parent Involvement
You're part of every session and learn strategies to use throughout the week. That way, the learning keeps going long after the session is done.
Real-Life Practice
Skills practiced at home carry over to real life more easily. Your child learns to communicate during meals, playtime, and family time, not in a sterile office.
Less Stress for the Whole Family
No rushing to appointments, no waiting rooms, no messing up nap time. Siblings can stay home and do their thing. Therapy fits into your day instead of taking it over.
What an In-Home Session Looks Like
Here's what a typical session looks like. We keep things consistent but flexible depending on how your child is doing that day.
Arrival and Setup
Your therapist arrives at your home with all the materials needed for the session. We set up in a comfortable spot — the living room floor, a play table, or wherever your child is most at ease.
Play-Based Therapy
Sessions are built around play — because that is how young children learn. Using a combination of our materials and your child's own toys, we work on targeted speech and language goals in a way that feels natural and engaging.
Parent Coaching
At the end of each session, we go over what was worked on and share specific things you can do during the week. This is one of the most valuable parts, because it means you can keep supporting your child between visits.
Session Summary
You receive a brief summary of each session, including what was targeted, how your child responded, and what to practice before the next visit. Progress is tracked and reviewed regularly.
In-Home vs. Clinic-Based Speech Therapy
Both options work. Here is how they compare for young children.
| In-Home Therapy | Clinic-Based Therapy | |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | Your home, daycare, or school | Clinical office |
| Travel required | None — the therapist comes to you | Family travels to clinic |
| Child's comfort | Familiar environment, own toys | New setting, clinic materials |
| Parent observation | Direct participation in every session | Varies by clinic |
| Skill transfer | Practiced in real-life context | May need to generalize from clinic |
| Siblings | Can stay home, minimal disruption | May need childcare arrangements |

Frequently Asked Questions About In-Home Speech Therapy
Why is in-home speech therapy better for young children?
Young children are most comfortable and engaged in familiar environments. In-home speech therapy allows your child to participate in sessions using their own toys, books, and surroundings, which supports more natural communication. Parents can also observe sessions directly and learn strategies to use throughout the day.
Where exactly do you provide in-home sessions?
We provide in-home speech therapy throughout Durham Region, including Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Courtice, and Brooklin. Sessions can take place at your home, your child's daycare, or their private school.
Is there an extra charge for in-home visits?
No. All of our sessions are conducted in-home — it is our standard model of service delivery, not an add-on. There is no additional travel fee.
How long are in-home sessions?
Sessions are typically 45 to 60 minutes, which includes time for direct therapy with your child and parent coaching at the end of each session.
What do I need to prepare for an in-home session?
Nothing special is needed. A quiet space with a small table or play area is helpful. We bring all therapy materials, toys, and resources. Your child's own toys and books are often incorporated into sessions as well.
